Antique Old Cut Diamond Studs

These recently completed solitaire studs feature 2 x old cut diamonds (.40 + .41ct) and are luxuriously surrounded in 22k yellow gold. These Antique diamonds are truely one of a kind with their unique twinkle.

Working in the gem trade I see all sorts of diamonds and the colour, clarity, carat weight and cut combinations are endless. There is one style of cut that I have always been particularly drawn too and this style of cut can have a number of variations, a cut as definite as nature. The old mine cut is a type of cut that was done before science and technology had a heavy influence in the way diamonds were cut. This cut was done before there was an in-depth understanding of refraction (light bending/splitting) within gemstones and when tools were… uncomplicated. While there may be diagrams that show how a mine cut was cut, the mathematics were rarely perfected and facets were cut much to the artisans discretion. Old mine cuts were cut to make the most of the diamonds natural crystal structure and show the gemstones clarity or 'water' as it was referred to. Cut before we were dazzled by the bright lights of electricity, old mine cuts were cut by/to suit candle light or oil lamp. Being cut to favour soft yellow lighting, this style of diamond cut encourages the stone to twinkle rather than sparkle like their mathematically cut contemporary - The Modern Brilliant cut diamond.
