Are Carved Gemstone Rings Fragile?
Are carved gemstone rings comfortable? The phrase “not an everyday ring” can understandably create some confusion.
When jewellers use this term, we don’t mean a piece cannot be worn often (unless, of course, it were made of sugar). This term suggests that certain designs or gemstones are more delicate and may not endure ALL of our daily activities
Many fine pieces were simply not intended to be knocked against hard surfaces, slipped into handbags or pockets, exposed repeatedly to water and sanitiser, or dropped onto tile or stone floors. Jewellery, like anything well made, requires considered handling.
With mindful wear, respecting a jewels materials and design, almost any piece can become part of your daily ritual.
That said, some boundaries apply universally. Jewellery should be removed before gardening, going to the beach, exercising/gym, swimming in chlorine, or bathing.
I’m always interested in how people live with their jewellery. Have you owned a fragile piece? Did it change how you wore it, or did you carry on as usual?
